PSHE/RSE

Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education / Relationship and Sex Education

At the River Wye Federation we aim to equip our pupils with precise and relevant knowledge of the world around them. We pride ourselves on working with our families and children to promote acceptance of diversity, a resilience for life and demonstrating how to be positive citizens whilst giving pupils opportunities to turn that knowledge into personal understanding.

We ensure our pupils are given opportunities to explore, clarify and if necessary, challenge their own and others’ values, attitudes, beliefs, rights and responsibilities in a safe, non-judgemental, nurturing environment.  Through our unique curriculum we aim to embed skills and strategies our children need in order to live healthy, safe, fulfilling, responsible and balanced lives.  We encourage pupils to be positive, resilient, curious, work collaboratively and with independence in both their learning and throughout day to day life.

At Whitchurch Primary establishing a safe, open and positive learning environment based on trusting relationships, is very important to us. You may have heard your child talking about the school’s ‘Jigsaw’ sessions but what is it and how does this help your child’s wider personal development? Through Jigsaw, all children are taught a PSHE lesson every week with all sessions starting with a ‘Mental Well-Being’ activity and lessons promoting discussion activities, where children are able to express their views and opinions in a safe, secure and accepting environment. Mental Well-Being activities include meditation, mindful colouring, breathing exercises, peer massage, sensory stories, sharing a hug or a picture or note of positivity from a friend.  We feel it is important to not only equip our pupils with the skills to make informed decisions and opinions, but also have the skills to be resilient and self-motivated in all aspects of their life.

We believe that Mindfulness is a vital tool for life: not only does it support the regulation of emotion and build emotional resilience, but it also enhances focus and concentration; both helping to optimise learning. The Jigsaw Chime and Calm Me exercises help children to relax their bodies and calm their minds – being ready for learning. This, in turn, will also equip pupils with life skills and resilience for the many challenges ahead.

Jigsaw is designed as a whole school approach with all year groups working on the same theme or ‘puzzle’ at the same time.

The six puzzle pieces or themes are:

Autumn 1: Being Me In My World

Autumn 2: Celebrating Difference (including anti-bullying)

Spring 1: Dreams and Goals

Spring 2: Healthy Me

Summer 1: Relationships

Summer 2: Changing Me

Through Jigsaw, we are helping children to learn well and be healthy, happy individuals, equipped to cope with the world.
